Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 8, 2010 at Assumption Catholic Church in Eden Valley for Lucille F. Haag, age 92, of Eden Valley who died Wednesday at Hilltop Care Center, Watkins. Rev. Virgil Braun will officiate and burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Sunday and from 10:00-10:45 a.m. Monday at Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home in Eden Valley. Eden Valley American Legion Post 381 Auxiliary will pray at 6:00 p.m., followed by parish prayers at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Lucille was born in a cabin on Rice Lake near Eden Valley on August 8, 1917 the oldest child of Earl and Blanche (Rexford) Brossard. She spent most of her childhood in the same area where she was born and went on to graduate as salutatorian of the Eden Valley High School Class of 1934. She worked for a year in the Twin Cities as a nanny/housekeeper and then attended teacher-training school in Faribault. She returned to the Rice Lake area and taught country school at District 77 for two years and District 205 for one year.
On June 24, 1939, Cele was united in marriage to Jack Haag. Cele spent much of her married life caring for the couple’s six children. She also loved gardening and was noted for her cooking skills from her dinners of fried chicken and apple pie to her homemade bread and cinnamon rolls, a Friday tradition at the Haag household. Cele also was a religious education teacher for many years at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Eden Valley. She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church until its closing when she became a member of Assumption Catholic Church. She was also a member of the Catholic Aid Association and the Eden Valley American Legion Post 381 Auxiliary.
The couple shared a love for dancing the old time waltzes, vacation trips “Up North” and getting together with family and friends. They also were both avid sports fans from Eden Valley-Watkins Eagles to the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. The happy union lasted for 50 years until Jack’s death on Sept. 20, 1989.
Cele spent most of her years as a widow living on her own near Eden Valley until moving to town in 2002. Failing health prompted her to move into Hilltop Care Center in December of 2005, where she maintained her spunk and feistiness and her witty personality made her a favorite among staff.
Cele will be sorely missed by her six children, Connie (Duane) Arnold, Columbia Heights, Betty (David) Lipinski, Eden Valley, Jim (Mona) Haag, Eden Valley, Mike (Mary) Haag, Richmond, Dan (Connie)Haag, Paynesville and Julie (Gail) Bulau, Eden Valley; as well as her 23 grandchildren; 37great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Ferne Leary, Greenville, TN, Gail (Harry) Lippert, Lindstrom; Gary (Shirley) Brossard, Mora and sisters-in-law, Rose Schindele and Helen Gaspar, both of Eden Valley.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jack ; sisters, Lorraine Gasper and Marilyn Ristow and infant grandsons, Timothy Lipinski and John Haag.
